RESUMO

Lung pleomorphic carcinoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that uncommonly metastasizes to the colon and only a few case reports have been published thus far. We present an exceptional case of colon metastasis from lung pleomorphic carcinoma in a 68-year-old man which was revealed by large bowel perforation, and we review the previous three published cases. Metastasis to the bowel from primary lung malignancy often lacks specific symptoms which result in delayed diagnosis. Bowel metastasis is a poor prognostic factor in patients with lung pleomorphic carcinoma, regardless of management strategy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) patients' diagnosis and management was affected by a global reorganization after the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Our study aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic on the pathological stage of newly diagnosed patients with BC compared to pre-pandemic and to identify predictive factors of tumor advanced stage. METHODS: Pathological records of all consecutive newly operated BC patients between March 2020 and December 2021 were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical and pathological prognostic factors of BC were collected and compared between pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. Then, predictive factors of tumor advanced stage were identified. RESULTS: Of the 225 cases included in the analysis, 98.7% were females and 1.3% were males. The median time from first histological diagnosis to first surgical treatment was enlarged by 42 days with a significant difference between the two periods (p = 0.002). Newly diagnosed BC patients during the COVID-19 pandemic were operated at a more advanced stage (54.1% vs 36.2%, p = 0.007), had a greater lymphovascular invasion (p = 0.002), lymph node metastasis (p = 0.015) and are more commonly of IBC NST histological type (p = 0.005). Moreover, multivariate analyses showed that the pandemic period (AOR = 2.28; p = 0.016) and the lympho-vascular invasion (p < 0.001) were independently associated with advanced stage of tumors. CONCLUSION: Our findings proved an increase in alarming rates of advanced stage BC associated with the COVID-19 crisis. These findings support recommendations for a quick restoration of BC screening at full capacity, with adequate prioritization strategies to mitigate harm.

RESUMO

Atypical spindle cell/pleomorphic lipomatous tumor (ASCPT) constitutes an emerging entity of lipomatous tumors. It is a benign tumor. It occurs typically in limbs and limb girdles. The occurrence in oral cavity is unusual. The diagnosis of this neoplasm is challenging. Herein, we report a case of ASCPT arising in the tongue.

RESUMO

Collision tumor is a rare entity composed of two different tumors that occur in close to one another and maintain distinct borders. Only few cases have been reported in the breast. We report the first case of concomitant and adjacent primary angiosarcoma (PBAS) and invasive carcinoma of the breast (IBC), in a 45-year-old patient which presented with a lump in her right breast. Biopsy revealed PBAS. She underwent mastectomy. Gross examination showed a hemorrhagic and spongy tumor in contact with a second small grayish-white mass. Histologically, the hemorrhagic tumor was consistent with a high grade (HG) PBAS; the second mass was consistent with an IBC with no images of histological admixture. The diagnosis of a collision tumor composed of HG PBAS and IBC was established. During follow-up, the patient developed ovarian angiosarcomatous metastasis. The diagnosis of breast collision tumor is very uncommon and hence is challenging for pathologist. Careful gross and microscopic examinations help in establishing the appropriate diagnosis.

RESUMO

Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytic disorder affecting lymph nodes as well as extranodal sites. Although cutaneous involvement in RDD is common, primary cutaneous RDD is a distinct and not well-documented entity with unknown aetiology and non-specific clinicopathological features. We report a case of a 57-year-old patient, who presented with an indolent skin nodule in the left sub-nipple area. Surgical excision was performed. Histological examination concluded to the diagnosis of cutaneous RDD with histological features mimicking IgG4-related disease. The diagnosis of systemic RDD with cutaneous involvement was ruled out after exclusion of extracutaneous involvement. No recurrence or systemic progression was observed during follow-up. The diagnosis of primary cutaneous RDD is very uncommon and hence is challenging for pathologist and dermatologist especially with features of IgG4-related disease. Careful systemic and microscopic examinations help in establishing the appropriate diagnosis.

RESUMO

Thalamic astrocytomas are rare central nervous system tumors that account for 1%-1.5% of all brain tumors. Their Clinical features depend on anatomical involvement. For these tumors, gross total resection is so difficult due to their deep location and also the infiltration of the optic pathway or brain stem. Unilateral adult thalamic locations are rarely described in the literature. Their radiological features often suggest lymphoma. The authors report here a new case of a primary unilateral thalamic pilocytic astrocytoma mimicking lymphoma diagnosed after a stereotactic core biopsy in a 62-year-old male patient with von Recklinghausen's disease and which is responsible for Dejerine-Roussy syndrome. The authors will proceed with a comprehensive review of literature regarding this rare entity.

RESUMO

Pemphigus herpetiformis (PH) is a rare form of pemphigus, especially when occurring in childhood. Misdiagnosis is common in this age group. The disease exhibits diverse clinical and histological aspects. Further immunological investigations should be performed in order to make the right diagnosis with a correct management strategy.

RESUMO

Hepatic injuries have been reported in patients with Coronavirus disease 2019 infection, particularly in those with moderate to severe illness. To date, pathological changes caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in liver tissue are unclear. Moreover, the mechanisms involved in liver injury in Coronavirus disease 2019 infection are not yet established. In this paper, we summarize the spectrum of pathologic findings of liver injury in patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 and we discuss the clinicopathological correlation and the mechanisms of liver damage in Coronavirus disease 2019 infection.

RESUMO

Cystic renal lesions are extremely common. The major clinical concern is differentiating simple renal cysts from complex cysts to assess the risk of malignancy. The Bosniak classification of renal cystic tumors is employed to distinguish benign cysts from potential malignant cysts. Benign renal tumors can be rarely encountered in Bosniak type 4 cysts. Herein, we report a case of 56-year-old female with a single right mediorenal solid-cystic mass classified bosniak 4. An open surgery was planned: There was a 2-cm-sized cystic tumor, mediorenal, in contact with the hilum. A lumpectomy was performed. Anatomopathological examination revealed a cystic oncocytoma.
